June 25 Report from Mike Goldfarb (before racing)
“It’s windy and you have to get right and get to the that huge rock wall you see in the early picture I sent you. So the first half of the first beat is complete chaos with boats tacking to port and trying to cross or ducking while more boat that went early and lost their lane are now coming back on starboard. It’s a lot of boats in not a very large area.”

Furio: 28, 33 (31st overall)
Dime: 31, 36 (35th overall)
0800 (PDT): Race 3 results just posted
War Canoe: 8, 9, 14 (7th overall)
Lift Ticket: 22, 21, 13 (17th overall)
Dime: 31, 36, 3 (24th overall)
Furio: 28, 33, 10 (25th overall)
0830: Report from Janet Laffitte
“Wow! Wow! Lake Garda did not disappoint today. 20-27kts. First race Dime lost their jib blocks right after the start. Second race Furio tore their kite on the first run. For all 3 War Canoe (although they hit a mark) and Lift Ticket sailed clean around the courses with no hiccups and the results are reflective. Three more days of fun, sun and plenty of wind!”
June 27 (Day 2)
Yesterday’s ripping southerly has been replace with a light and shifty southerly. Results for races 4 and 5 have been posted. It is 4 PM there and it appears there has been a race 6, but I don’t see the results yet.
Here is how our teams are doing:
War Canoe: 8, 9, 14, 8, 21 (10th overall)
Dime: 31, 36, 3, 6, 18 (14th overall)
Furio: 28, 33, 10, 12, 22 (19th overall)
Lift Ticket: 22, 21, 13, 48, 32 (27th overall)
(1 throw out)
Lift Ticket was up there on the first beat of race 4, along with the Brazilians on the right side of the course. Must have broken something, because they were off to the side on the run and ended up retiring from the race.
0745: Race 6 just posted:
War Canoe: 8, 9, 14, 8, 21, 28 (10th overall)
Dime: 31, 36, 3, 6, 18, 9 (12th overall)
Furio: 28, 33, 10, 12, 22, 7 (16th overall)
Lift Ticket: 22, 21, 13, 48, 32, 33 (28th overall)
Later we learned from Janet Laffitte that they broke their spin halyard soft shackle in race 4 and had to get back to the dock and fix it. Here are the pics from the repair.
June 28 (Day 3):
If you haven’t been watching the tracker (link at the top of this page with all of the links), watch race 7. The Laffittes and the Macks show how speed kills — and win the race going away. It is almost better knowing the outcome, because half way up the first beat it seems impossible that they would win the race. But they just speed, speed, speed. The big split on the first run helped too, but they absolutely fell on the speed button and crushed it.
0722: Races 7 and 8 posted
Dime: 31, 36, 3, 6, 18, 9, 18, 4 (10th overall)
War Canoe: 8, 9, 14, 8, 21, 28, 9, 21 (12th overall)
Furio: 28, 33, 10, 12, 22, 7, 20, 27 (19th overall)
Lift Ticket: 22, 21, 13, 48, 32, 33, 1, 22 (23rd overall)
Here is a video of team Lift Ticket winning race 7 — quite convincingly!:
While you are watching the tracker, check out the first beat of the 8th race where the Loes round the top mark first. Unfortunately, they were right with the three fastest boats, but they held on to finish 4th.
Awesome day for Seattle teams.
If you are wondering what it feels like, here is a quote from Keith Whittemore: “Thursday here on Garda, I think was the most fun I have ever had sailing. While we had some significant issues, it was blowing, it was hot, the water was fresh/flat/warm, amazing scenery, racing around at 15-16 knots for five hours.“
I am sure Race 9 will be posted soon.
0800: Race 9 Posted — like I said, awesome day for Seattle teams.
War Canoe: 8, 9, 14, 8, 21, 28, 9, 21, 3 (10th overall)
Dime: 31, 36, 3, 6, 18, 9, 18, 4, 9 (11th overall)
Furio: 28, 33, 10, 12, 22, 7, 20, 27, 5 (15th overall)
Lift Ticket: 22, 21, 13, 48, 32, 33, 1, 22, 18 (22nd overall)
In the lead group, the Spanish are out front by 8 points, but have a 16th as their throw out, making them a bit vulnerable to the Aussies who have a 10th as their throw out. So tomorrow is going to be very interesting. If the Aussies beat the Spanish in race 10 with 1 or more boats between them, the delta will be 6 or less. Then the Aussies would have an incentive to jump on the Spanish at the start and push back to 16th or worse.
June 29, 4th and Final Day:
Results posted for races 10 and 11, could be a wrap.
War Canoe: 8, 9, 14, 8, 21, 28, 9, 21, 3, 12, 16 = 121 points (9th overall)
Dime: 31, 36, 3, 6, 18, 9, 18, 4, 9, 16, 13 = 126 points (11th overall, 2nd Corinthian)
Furio: 28, 33, 10, 12, 22, 7, 20, 27, 5, 36, 37 = 199 points (19th overall, 7th Corinthian)
Lift Ticket: 22, 21, 13, 48, 32, 33, 1, 22, 18, 25, 15 = 202 points (20th overall, 8th Corinthian)
Seattle’s best showing in a J/70 World Championship for sure, and I heard there were 26 Olympic medals in the fleet.
Well done team. Make sure to check out the facebook links at the top of the page, there are many great pictures. Here are a few of them.
And the win goes to the Spanish, who lead the entire regatta and held off the Aussies by 2 points on the last day.
Yupi: Joan Cardona Mendez: 22 points
Vamos: Tim Ryan: 24 points
SailRacing: Anton Dahlberg: 54 points
