StFYC Summer WingDing

  • St Francis Yacht Club 99 Yacht Road San Francisco, CA, 94123 United States (map)

Updates in chronological order, last update 1600, June 22, 2025

No matter who or where you thing wingfoiling was invented, the San Francisco city front and Crissy Field are in the top handful of locations for hosting a wingfoiling championship. St Francis Yacht club, located on that very stretch of beach, has been a leader and innovator in running foiling events. So we will want to be watching as the event unfolds.

Hood River entrants include:

  • Matthew Couvreux

  • Claire Couvreux

  • Leif Hauge

  • Jed Reitman

The broad appeal of wingfoiling is evident in the registration list is 40 deep with categories for women, under 19, over 35, and over 50. Competitors have traveled from New Zealand, and Australia, and all over the US.

We have people on the ground sending us updates and pictures, so stay tuned.

June 20th, Racing Starts Today

The breeze is up. And going up more. It is already blowing 15 knots at Anita Rock, and the forecast shows it building to a 1 PM peak of 22 knots with gusts to 27. Sounds like 3.0m wings or smaller.

Here are some pictures from Doogie Couvreux of Matthew and Claire Couvreux and the Hood River invaders from the north. Good luck today everyone!

Competitors Briefing at 1100, first warning signal at 1330.

2100: These pictures just in from team Hood River, who are getting some valuable experience in the wild conditions off Crissy Field. 7 super windy races today, but they stopped in the middle for lunch… how civilized! Sean Herbert from Manly Sailing Club in New Zealand is putting on a clinic. He has won every race so far, even ahead of local legend Johnny Heineken. You know your good when you are beating a guy that has a gybe named after him!

Good luck tomorrow team!

More about Sean Herbert on his Facebook page

It doesn’t look like Johnny Heineken’s Facebook has been updated in a while. Here is his Instagram.

June 21st, Day 2

There is a little less RED in the forecast today, and the schedule calls for up to 4 short races like the 7 sailed yesterday, and then a long race to the Berkely Pier and back. The pier is a bit over 7 miles away, so if we call the course 15 miles, the race should take about an hour. During yesterday’s races, Leif Hauge sailed 55 miles! Here are some pics.

Competitors Briefing at 1100, first warning signal at 1230.

More pictures in from Doogie Couvreux. Looks quite a bit lighter today. Thank you very much for the pictures Doogie!

#14 Johnny Heineken heading out today

1445: Four races in the bag. Presumably these are the short course races. Sean continues to win every one. Johnny sailed two throw outs. Now it is going to be an interesting fight for second. In the Hood River group, Leif Hauge chalked up the best finish yet at 25th. Steady improvement it what it is all about!

1515: I am guessing the long distance race is underway now. Anita Rock has been reporting under 20 all day today and the model shows things fading a bit, so I hope everyone has the right wing up.

In looking over the results, check out Calum McDonald, currently in 11th place after 11 races. He jumps out because he got a 4th in race 11, and it is unusual to see a number that small, that far down the list. But after a bit of googling, it appears Calum, from Kaneohe Yacht Club in Hawaii, has plenty of foiling experience on iQfoils, WASZPs, and WingFoils - and somehow he is still under 19. So it is pretty cool to see his progress in this event: 8, 12, 20, 13, 12, 21, 15, 5, 5, 6, 4. He must have gotten some good sleep last night!

June 22nd, Day 3

0800: More great pictures in overnight from Doogie Couvruex;

A few notes from the results:

  • Finishing the distance race was a victory in itself.

  • The distance race counted double.

  • The fleet has now been broken into Gold and Silver for the medal races.

  • JP Lattanzi from Kaneohe YC is now five points ahead in the race to 2nd place.

  • Looks like the top PNW person in the standings is Richie Gordon in 16th place after 2 days.

Not in the results: Fiona Wylde sailed the distance race and won the womens division.

No RED in the forecast at all today. Let’s hope there is enough breeze to get the fleet up and going. The flood is on until 1217, and the ebb is not very big at 1.3 knots at 1437, so we don’t get much of a boost from the current today. First warning at 1230, medal series at 1400. Sure would be cool if there was some video!

1600: 15 races in the results now and Sean Herbert from Manly Sailing Club in New Zealand won 14 in a row an finally had an "off" race -- where he finished 2nd.  Kai Mirel, from host St Francis Yacht Club claimed the win.  It is nice to know that everyone is human!

JP Lattanzi, from Kaneohe Yacht Club, has been super steady with all top 10 finishes, and so far is holding off local legend Johnny Heineken.  According to the schedule, there could be a medal race which could mix these results up.  But as of 1600 we have not seen it.

The breeze is holding up with Anita Rock reporting 21 knots and the current at full ebb now.
