July 1, 2025: 2nd practice day, racing starts tomorrow.
It turns out we have a local from Hood River, Sen “Doogie” Coureux is the bowman on Platoon. He will be sending his insights and pictures. Here are his pictures comments about the practice racing (today and yesterday). Thank you Doogie and good luck tomorrow!
Practice day 1 (June 30th)
Windy. 20-25 knots with some moments at 27 knots
Big waves. Classic Cascais day. Some damage among the fleet
Phoenix broken kite
Provezza broken bob stay that caused the bow spirit to break and some more damage.
Gladiator big wipeout. Broken aft pulpit. Couple of guys getting checked out at the hospital. Today was the light air day!
Practice day 2 (July 1st)
2 practices races 25 knots at the top mark and getting windier on the run.
Top end conditions for these boats.
Platoon port tacked the fleet at the start, crossed the fleet and won the first practice race.
Second practice race, we started close to the boat end, tacked quickly and rounded second at the top. We broke a bow pulpit in a jibe and raced the second race with the middle lifeline lashed to the bow. We pulled off all our maneuvers in conditions that you just wanted it go right without having a major. Even being conservative sometimes felt just in time.
July 2 (First race day)
Race 1
First hand account from Sean “Doogie” Couvreux on Platoon from Race 1.
Watch the race on YouTube with this link.
0600: Big breeze expected, livestream has started on YouTube
Right now Andi is showing interviews of sailors on shore. It is 2 PM there. I will post updates from time to time here.
0622: In sequence for race 1.
0625: It’s a world championship, it’s breezy, it’s epic, and it’s a general recall… even the big guns must manage the adrenaline.
0640: Postponed so Provezza can change their main.
0648: In sequence for race 1
0650: Another general recall
0700: Race 1, in sequence again. Evidently the right side is favored, but the boat end of the line has not drawn a big bunch of starters, so it will be interesting to see who can tack first.
0705: They got it started, but everyone was super early again and they called Vayu and Alkedo over — and it took them a long time to get clear to go back.
0740: Final run to the finish of race 1. On the first beat the right was supposed to be favored, but it looked like there was more breeze on the left. Sled, Alegre, and American Magic did the best job of balancing between the two. Platoon had a few moments, and might have seen 2nd for a moment on the first beat leaderboard, but was also as deep as 8th at the gate.
Conditions are quite up and down, and you can see the teams shifting gears.
0750: R1 finish order: Sled, Alegra, American Magic, Paprec, Gladiator. Something broke on Platoon and they finished last sailing most of the final leg without a kite.
Note: Luise Wasner is doing the on the water commentary again and she absolutely makes the broadcast. A perfect balance between her and Andi.
Race 2
Watch the race on YouTube with this link.
0840: In sequence (soon). Breeze had dropped between races, but is back up now. More breeze on the left.
0855: More generals and finally got it off with Vayu on the pin and Alpha + also over early.
0900: American Magic was the last surviving boat at the pin end after the others went back and had room to rumble. Got out a few boatlengths from Sled and Paprec and at 5 mins tacked, safely ahead. Alegre and Platoon going for the right side, but each time tacking back — could be they get into lighter breeze and tack away.
0910: Weather mark positions: American Magic, Sled, Paprec, Alegre, Platoon
0940: Paprec wins! After chasing down American Magic on the final run and passing in dramatic style right before the finish.
Finishing order: Paprec, American Magic, Sled, Platoon, Alegre.
Sled is top boat for the day with a 1, 3. American Magic has 3, 2, and Paprec has 4,1.
July 3
Race 3
Watch the race on YouTube with this link
0515: In sequence. Even breeze across the course. Luise thinks the right. All Clear!
American Magic midline Phoenix on their hip, Paprec tacks at the RC boat… the bets have been made
0516: One minute in and Phoenix and American Magic and everyone else have tacked onto port.
0530: First weather mark: American Magic, Phoenix, Provezza, Paprec, Platoon
0534: American Magic gybed at the mark, no one followed. Big split.
0537: American Magic back across with a small gain, gybed in front of Phoenix. Vayu followed American Magic, but had rounded deep. Now back in touch with the others in second. Maybe from 8th to 2nd….nice one.
0540: Gate: American Magic, Vayu, Phoenix, Paprec… Gladiator first go go around the left turn gate mark, followed by Platoon.
0615: Race 3 finshes: American Magic, Phoenix, Vayu, Gladiator, Paprec
Standings after 3 races:
American Magic: 3, 2, 1
Paprec: 4, 1, 5
Sled: 1, 3, 9
Alegre: 2, 5, 11
Phoenix: 8, 10, 2
Race 4
Watch the race on YouTube with this link
0645: Race 4 started all clear. American Magic in second row tacking right as the gun went off. Very crowded at the pin end.
One minute in and everyone is onto port tack and American Magic is poked in the middle of the lineup.
0700: American Magic tacked onto starboard below the layline, and leading the pack in from the right side.
0703: First weather mark: Not American Magic after all, rounding order: Paprec, Vayu, American Magic.
0705: Leaders all gybed at the offset mark, the back half of the fleet split to offshore hoping for more breeze.
0708: Can’t look away even for a minute. Alkedo, who rounded 6th, made big money going offshore and now leads as the boats come back together.
0712: Alkedo turns left at the gate, Paprec turns right followed by Vayu.
0723: Alkedo extending its lead, American Magic, Paprec, and Vayu all even and fighting for position before the layline.
0730: 2nd Weather mark: Alkedo (quite advanced), Paprec, American Magic, Vayu
0737: Alkedo wins, Paprec second, American Magic, Vayu, Alegre, Platoon
Standings after 4 races:
American Magic: 3, 2, 1, 3 = 9
Paprec: 4, 1, 5, 2 = 12
Sled: 1, 3, 9, 8 = 21
Alegre: 2, 5, 11, 5 = 23
Alkedo = 25
Vayu = 25
Platoon = 27
So the stage is set half way through the regatta. American Magic and Paprec in a shoot out for first and second, and Sled, Alegre, Alkedo, Vayu, and Platoon all with 3rd place ambitions.
Correction! There are 5 days in this regatta, so we are not quite half way yet.
July 4
Race 5: Broadcast has been moved again to 0730 PDT. Now 0745.
Watch the race on YouTube with this link.
0807: In sequence, light and foggy.
0810: Paprec with speed at the pin. American Magic midline in a pack. Vayu tacked at the RC boat end.
0813: Alpha + had been holding the group from tacking, and then tacked and everyone followed onto port tack.
0820: More pressure on the left, Paprec may get the most out of it although they have madeit over to the right side now. Gladiator, Alkedo and Provezza were deep, went left late, and may get the jump on everyone.
0826: 1st weather mark: Paprec, Phoenix, Alkedo, Gladiator, Provezza
0837: American Magic making gains by carrying on offshore when the leaders had gybed early. Maybe more pressure.
0840: Gate: Phoenix (left turn), Alkeco (right turn), Paprec overlapped inside American Magic — who was penalized for port/starboard just at the circle, Gladiator all left turn. American Magic dropped to 5th after penalty turn.
0852: 2nd weather mark: Phoenix way out front, Paprec, Alkedo, Gladiator, Provezza, American Magic
0900: Great drone video over Paprec showing the crew rocking the boat like a Laser. Old habits die hard!
0911: Finishing order: Phoenix, Paprec, Alkedo, Gladiator, Provezza, American Magic
Standings after 5 (now half way)
Paprec: 4, 1, 5, 2, 2 = 14
American Magic: 3, 2, 1, 3, 6 = 15
Alkedo: 10, 6, 8, 1, 3 = 28
Sled: 1, 3, 9, 8, 8 = 29
Phoenix: 8, 10, 2, 11, 1 = 32
Alegre, Gladiator, Vayu, Platoon, and Provezza between 33 and 35!
Breeze is forecast to be back big tomorrow.
July 5
(since I am watching in replay, instead of time of day, the times are minutes into the race)
Race 6
Watch the race on YouTube with this link
00:00 American Magic started 3 boats up from the pin and Paprec started three boats down from the RC boat. Very orderly start with Provezza over early, and Alegre was alone in the second row, but managed to tack onto port and get into the lineup going right.
03:00 Everyone on port in the usual drag race lineup. Platoon most left and Alkedo most right.
13:40 Alkedo and Paprec tacked on the layline. Sled under the layline and then American Magic lee bow on Paprec.
16:30 Sled made their thin layline call work and lead around the weather mark.
17:00 First weather mark positions: Sled, American Magic, Paprec, Platoon, Alkedo, Gladiator
20:00 Leaders all held on starboard, trailers gybed for the split.
24:50 Sled took the right turn at the gate, followed by American Magic and Gladiator — who gybed at the offset mark and made the inshore side of the course work bigtime and moved from 6th to 3rd. Big loser on the run was Pacrec who was quite a bit behind Gladiator at the gate and was the first to take the left turn.
34:40 Port tack was the long tack again and Paprec showed big speed and caught back up and tacked and crossed Gladiator but still had a ways to go to catch American Magic.
39:25 Sled called a thin layline again and was first to round the 2nd weather mark.
39:30 Second weather mark rounding order: Sled, American Magic, Paprec, Gladiator, Alegre, Alkedo
41:15 Gladiator again the first boat to gybe (at the offset), Paprec gybed to protect 3rd place.
49:00 Finishing order: Sled, American Magic, Paprec, Gladiator, Alegre
Standings after 6
American Magic: 3, 2, 1, 3, 6, 2 = 17
Paprec: 4, 1, 5, 2, 2, 3 = 17
Sled: 1, 3, 9, 8, 8, 1 = 30
Alkedo: 10, 6, 8, 1, 3, 6 = 34
Gladiator: 5, 11, 4, 9, 4, 4 = 37
Race 7

Breeze up even more. solid over 20
00:00 Counting up from the pin: Provezza, Platoon, Vayu, and down from the boat: Gladiator, Alkedo, Paprec. American Magic right in the middle.
00:43 Platoon tacked and crossed Vayu — and everyone. Launched!
02:00 Everyone on port
10:50 Gladiator tacked very close to the layline, the next 4 boats tack together under the layline, Platoon crossing them all easily, and tacks well short of the layline (before reaching Gladiator’s line).
13:00 American Magic has to duck Alkedo, made it out to the layline to tack on top of Paprec.
15:00 A big right shift causes everyone above Platoon’s line to be overstood, and helped Platoon turn a short layline into an easy layline.
17:00 At the weather mark: Platoon, Sled, Gladiator, Provezza, American Magic, Vayu, Alegre, Paprec.
18:00 Alegre got a wrap during the set and Paprec screamed past them.
18:45 Last place boat Alkedo was the first to gybe
20:20 American Magic gybed before any of the boats ahead, and started everyone into their gybes. Gladiator may have rushed theirs because they seemed to have lost the sheet and had to send the bowman out the sprit.
23:50 The boats that gybed early for the inshore side made out again and American Magic just got to that side in time to lead them back to the gate.
24:50 Platoon was well ahead and took the left turn, followed by Sled, and American Magic into 3rd and took the right turn.
25:30 Big mayhem behind. Vayu left turn, Paprec right turn in 5th.
32:00 Everyone on port, Sled took a hitch over to stay in front of American Magic.
36:00 Everyone tacked well short of the layline (after the overstanding last time)
39:00 The right shift did not show up that time, so two more tacks for everyone.
40:00 Platoon at the second weather mark
40:40 Sled around next with American Magic right behind, then a gap and then Vayu and Paprec very close together.
46:00 Sled gybed and American Magic went right with them. All boats going over 20 knots.
47:30 American Magic got speed on Sled
49:10 American Magic edges Sled
Finishing order: Platoon, American Magic, Sled, Vayu, Paprec
Standings after 7
American Magic: 3, 2, 1, 3, 6, 2, 2 = 19
Paprec: 4, 1, 5, 2, 2, 3, 5 = 22
Sled: 1, 3, 9, 8, 8, 1, 3 = 33
Alkedo: 10, 6, 8, 1, 3, 6, 9 = 43
Vayu: 9, 9, 3, 4, 9, 7, 4 = 45
Platoon: 46
Alegre: 46
Phoenix: 47
Gladiator: 47
Race 8
Watch the race on YouTube with this link
00:00 American Magic poked and OCS. Paprec just barely made the pin.
10:00 The usual port tack drag race with Paprec on the left most edge, American Magic in the middle, Alkedo most right
10:30 American Magic tacked well under the layline and Alpha + tacked on their lee bow.
14:14 American Magic held on as long as they could, and then tacked away and had to go well above the layline to get a lane into the mark. Half the fleet was well overstood.
17:00 Gladiator first to the mark. Followed by Alkedo, Sled, Alegre, Paprec…American Magic in last.
18:00 Gladiator did a bear away, Alkedo gybe set, Sled bear away, Alegre gybe, Paprec bear away. A very interesting split developed. American Magic gybe set to split with Paprec.
18:50 Gladiator gybed to protect. Well before the layline. Paprec followed.
23:46 Alkedo jumped ahead of Gladiator. American Magic gybed inside the right side pack.
25:15 Alkedo first to the gate, turned left, Gladiator, Sled (right), Alegre, Paprec, American Magic (right turn).
34:15 Alkedo may be going past the layline, American Magic had a clean lane, up to 5th (by the tracker)
35:12 American Magic got far enough ahead of Paprec to hit them hard, causing them to tack away.
42:20 Paprec put on some speed and even after taking two extra tacks, got into a position with American Magic preventing them from tacking. They Paprec took them beyond the layline, and American Magic luffed almost to a standstill. Paprec tacked, but had no where to go, American Magic was able to duck behind them and find a place in line to the mark, while Paprec had to gybe around below the mark. As they say down under, a little too much “red mist”!
If you only watch one thing today. Check it out here on YouTube.
46:00 After all of that, Paprec and American Magic split big on the run with American Magic inshore.
50:00 Paprec has some serious downwind speed and went from 11th to 9th, only behind American Magic because they were on starboard.
Final finishing order: Alkedo, Gladiator, Sled, Alegre, Platoon, American Magic (8), Paprec (10)
Standings after 8
American Magic: 3, 2, 1, 3, 6, 2, 2, 8 = 27
Paprec: 4, 1, 5, 2, 2, 3, 5, 10 = 32
Sled: 1, 3, 9, 8, 8, 1, 3, 3 = 36
Alkedo: 10, 6, 8, 1, 3, 6, 9, 1 = 44
Gladiator: 5, 11, 4, 9, 4, 4, 10, 2 = 49
July 6 - Final Day - Races 9 and 10.
Race 9
Watch the race on YouTube with this link.
Racing was delayed for an hour while the race committee tried to find a course area not over the wind limit. Outside was reported at survival conditions. The course area nearby to shore at the entrance to the river and adjacent to the yacht club.
Times are race time, not day time.
-01:30: The three regatta leaders were clustered near the layline to the boat end with American Magic to leeward and forward of Sled, as Paprec reached down on top of both of them.
-01:15 Paprec went for a hook on American Magic, and American Magic responded by bearing off and building speed — which used up their entire hole, putting Alegre too close to leeward of them. Paprec turned up, and then American Magic turned up to try to rebuild the gap.
-01:00 Paprec was ahead and to windward of American Magic, Sled on Paprec’s hip, back a couple of boatlenghts.
-00:45 Sled did 2 tacks, Paprec tacked and something went wrong and bore off, heading away from the starting line. This may have been them stopping and sliding backwards. Either way, they were not making any progress towards the starting line.
-00:30 Sled may have concluded that American Magic was above the layline and passed to the stern of American Magic and Alegre looking for a hole. Paprec still stopped. Possibly having run into weeds, or something in the water? (a very speculative guess only). Gladiator now above Sled and American Magic.
-00:15 There may have been a big shift to the right because Provezza, to leeward of Alegre, may be the layline boat making Alegre, American Magic, and Gladiator all in precarious positions. Paprec was still going backwards.
00:00 Gladiator did 2 tacks, everyone slow and behind the line at the gun.
00:15 Alegre got shot out the back, American Magic started at the boat end, maybe 8 seconds late with Provezza ahead and to leeward, Gladiator came through after American Magic. Paprec sill 60 meters behind the line but now moving.
00:30 Provezza, American Magic, Gladiator, and Paprec all tacked, Paprec barely laying the RC boat.
00:45 Paprec had to shoot head to wind to get around the RC boat.
03:00 Just after Alkedo tacked onto port, Alegre was the last boat continuing to the left, and Paprec tacked onto starboard.
07:00 Paprec got to the left just as a big left shift came through.
10:00 The boats on the right, including American Magic, got a right shift while the boats on the left continued with their left shift. The pattern looked just like Garda.
12:30 It was a classic 2 breezes scenario where the boats on the right tacked on their right shift, but fell out of it as they got back into the left shift. About this time American Magic narrowly crossed Paprec just down from the starboard layline and the middle of the fleet.
17:00 Phoenix was well ahead at the first weather mark, the Alegre, Alkedo, American Magic, and Paprec.
19:00 Paprec gybed away.
21:00 The starboard gybe boats were headed a bunch, making them look good until they had to gybe and the angle was very bad. Meanwhile Paprec and Alegre were going low and fast on port.
26:00 American Magic surged back after looking terrible, but Paprec was still ahead slightly.
27:00 Gate roundings: Phoenix (left turn), Alpha + (right turn), Alegre (L), Alkedo (R), Paprec(L), Gladiator (R), Sled (L), American Magic (R) — full snakes and ladders.
38:00 The shift went more right than anything else and Paprec was farther right and gained, and then crossed quite a bit ahead of American Magic.
42:00 Second weather mark rounding order: Phoenix, Alegre, Alpha+, Paprec, Gladiator, Alkedo, Sled, Platoon, American Magic. Enough to boats between them to tie up the score.
46:00 Both boats carried on starboard, and American Magic was the first to gybe and looked to be bringing down a puff with them.
50:00 Tracker has Paprec into 3rd, American Magic still 9th.
Final positions: Phoenix, Alpha +, Gladiator, Alegre, Paprec, Sled, Alkedo, American Magic
Standings after 9
American Magic: 3, 2, 1, 3, 6, 2, 2, 8, 8 = 35
Paprec: 4, 1, 5, 2, 2, 3, 5, 10, 5, = 37
Sled: 1, 3, 9, 8, 8, 1, 3, 3, 6 = 42
Alkedo: 10, 6, 8, 1, 3, 6, 9, 1, 7 = 51
Gladiator: 5, 11, 4, 9, 4, 4, 10, 2, 3 = 52
Race 10
Watch the race on YouTube with this link
-01:00 Paprec and American Magic going after it like it’s Congressional Cup, and American Magic ended up to leeward with a thin lane above Phoenix, and Paprec comfortably gapped to weather.
00:00 American Magic got the squeeze at the start with both Phoenix below and Paprec above bow forward and rolling.
01:30 The shift went to the left and hurt American Magic even more, so they tacked and Paprec tacked right on them and they did another downspeed tack to get the split.
03:00 They continued to split, possibly because Paprec was showing a lift on port and it was enough to convince them they should hold
04:00 American Magic tacked onto port along with the remaining left siders setting up the port tack drag race.
13:00 Again the left boats showed a shift to the left and the right boats showed a shift to the right.
15:00 When the boats came back together on the starboard layline, American Magic was ahead of Paprec tacked right on them.
16:15 Weather mark rounding order: Phoenix, Provezza, American Magic, Paprec, Platoon
17:25 Phoenix and American Magic gybed, Provezza and Paprec continued on starboard.
18:25 Paprec gybed, still with considerable time to sail on starboard.
20:00 American Magic was in great pressure, sailed into 2nd place behind Phoenix, with at least 4 boats between them and Paprec.
23:00 American Magic sailed into a big hole and their speed dropped to 4.7 knots before recovering. Meanwhile Paprec was going 11 knots or more on the other side.
27:00 At the gate Provezza, Phoenix, Alpha +, and Paprec round the right turn mark before Platoon, American Magic, Alkedo and Sled round the left turn mark.
28:00 Both Paprec and American Magic tack back towards the center and somehow, when they crossed, American Magic was back in the lead, tacked on them, and Paprec tacked — setting up another split.
33:00 American Magic, sailing a strategy of staying close to Paprec, followed to the left and got the left shift and tacked.
37:00 This time Paprec was on the left and got the left shift and American Magic was on the right and got the right shift plus a light spot.
42:00 The left paid again! At the final weather mark of the regatta: Provezza, Alpha +, Platoon, Phoenix, Vayu, Paprec, Sled, American Magic. One boat between then produces a tie that Paprec would win. If this finishing order stayed, Paprec would have been the new world champion.
45:00 Not long after the set, Sled’s kite ripped in half and American Magic sailed past. So the finishing order had American Magic back in 1st by 1 point.
49:00 But up ahead Paprec was sailing high and hot and over the top of the lead pack.
51:00 After the gybe, Paprec was right on Platoon and bringing their downwind speed. American Magic was well behind them, but there were no boats in between.
52:00 Platoon shot forward reducing Paprec’s chance of putting a boat between them.
53:00 Finishing order: Provezza, Alpha +, Platoon, Vayu, Phoenix, Paprec, American Magic.
FINAL Standings after 10 races
American Magic: 3, 2, 1, 3, 6, 2, 2, 8, 8, 7 = 42
Paprec: 4, 1, 5, 2, 2, 3, 5, 10, 5, 6 = 43
Sled: 1, 3, 9, 8, 8, 1, 3, 3, 6, 9 = 51
What an amazing event!
And the tracker is here.
