The final event of the Tri Island series running in its 50th anniversary year takes sailors 25 miles from Shilshole Bay around Blake Island and back. An alternate course of 12 miles for Racer/Cruisers to Blakely Rock and back is also offered.
Live Updates Will be Posted Here once the race starts at 9 AM on May 31.
0845: Portage Bay on site, the Sailflow windmeter at Golden Gardens is showing NW 1 (not a typo, it was 5 a few mins ago). So there may be a postponement.
0912: Breeze is up! Race is off! Glory is making 8.3 knots on the way to West Point. Who knew! The Sailflow wind meter at Golden Gardens is back up to 4, must be better out away from shore.
0930: Off to a better start than anyone expected. Glory, Blue and Hooligan leading as they stream across from West Point towards Eagle Harbor.
0945: This just in from Hooligan. Thank you Jay Renehan!
11:00 It is going to be over before we know it! Glory is almost back to Restoration Point after rounding the island and Blue not far behind. Looks like everyone is rounding east side first (clockwise) this year. Annapurna has gotten past Hooligan, both just clear of Blake Island now.
1115: In 2016 John Buchan on ‘Glory’ set the course record of 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 45 seconds. By my math, we are now 2 hours and 10 minutes into the race and ‘Glory’ is closing on the finish at 9 knots, with what looks to be about a mile to go.
1125: ‘Glory’ was not laying the finish, and had to tack. So the 2016 record is probably safe. ‘Annapurna’, ‘Hooligan’, and ‘Tachyon’ very close off or Rich Passage.
1130: Correction. I didn’t add the distance to the temporary mark, so the record is not in jeopardy. ‘Glory’ has to sail up to the temporary mark by West Point and back to the finish.
1145: ‘Glory’ now around the turning mark and closing in on the line honors finish. Who would have thought they would be even close to the record when today started. Elapsed time will likely be under 3 hours. ‘Blue’ is working up to the turning mark. The race to watch will be between the next three: ‘Annapurna’, ‘Hooligan’, and ‘Tachyon’ — no changes in position in the last 20 mins.
‘Hooligan’ and ‘Blue’ finishing off of Elliott Bay Marina. Thank you Brian Ledbetter for the photos.
