2025 J/70 Mixed Plus National Championship - Day 2 Recap

On a day when the southerly was again supposed to die and be replaced by a northerly, the former hung on long enough for the race committee to run one good race. The breeze did die as predicted, and the northerly took its time, so racing was called for the day. The one race completed was a light air contest made even lighter by the ebb going with the wind. The first leg was set at 0.9 of a mile and the warning fired off on time at 1100. Whether by local knowledge or herd mentality, the boats that could hold their lanes carried on towards shore in formation, while those who could not, had to tack out for clear lanes.

A few decided to bang the right corner, but most everyone tacked back to starboard and the fleet turned inside out a bit because the boats that took clearing tacks got into a bit more breeze. By the weather mark, however it was back to the known order with 'Riff' rounding first, and 'War Canoe', 'Lift Ticket', 'Lake Shark', and 'Mossy' rounding out the top 5. 'Riff' gybed immediately and 'Lift Ticket' showed considerable downwind speed and jumped out from the pack. These two leaders and 'War Canoe' turned right at the gate, and 'Mossy' and 'Hygge' turned left.

On the second beat, the right paid for a while with better breeze, but the left came in at the last possible moment ensuring that 'Riff' would hold on to their lead. And hold on 'Riff' did, winning going away by a margin of 2 minutes over 'Mossy' who just barely got a nose in front of three other boats, all finishing overlapped.

The Vakaros tracker showing places 2-5 overlapped at the finish of race 5.

The results of the mirrored the current standings in the regatta, now with a throw out after five races:

  1. Riff: 1, 4, 1, 1 =7 pts

  2. Mossy: 1, 2, 2, 2 = 7 pts

  3. WarCanoe: 3, 1, 3, 3 = 10 pts

  4. Lift Ticket: 6, 7, 2, 4 = 19 pts

  5. Yolanda; 2, 5, 8, 5 = 20 pts

Full results here.

Tomorrow the northerly is supposed to get its act together and start at about 0900, which would be good for the 1100 start time.

Vakaros has it's tracker up and running and it is a great way to watch the racing. Check it out here.
